Balmoral
« on: March 08, 2010, 12:47:18 PM »
Classic situation at Balmoral last night. I pull up and go to plot on. Go in at number 1 but there is a cab in front so i speak to the Driver to see if he forgot to plot on and he  advises that he is a street cab who has stopped to clean his motor.

Mmmmm I leave it at that then another central taxi pulls up so now there are 3 of us.

Passenger arrives at my door and as its not an official rank I reluctantly point him to the street cab and he gets in.

Other central driver then kicks up with streetcab for 5 mins and eventually the passenger gets out has had enough, gets out and goes for the bus.

In the interim another passenger arrives and gets in my cab so off I go as the argument continued.

Certainly not a good impression for the trade.

Re the Balmoral I think its a courtesy rank for Central but does anyone know the actula position if others start to rank up.

I assume that its a case of 'hard luck' central if others choose to stop there but i'm not sure.

Balmoral have stated via Central that no more than 2 cars at any time o thsi could lead to issues.

Not 100% sure about this but as it's not an official rank i think any taxi could wait for a fare whether Central, City, Comcab or street cars. ::)

Having shouting matches with other drivers is totally pathetic in front of passengers though :-[

If that Central driver came up to my cab I would listen to his argument and then COMPLETELY ignore the person as if they didn't even exist.

Passenger approached you first why would you send them up to a street car when it's not a rank, street car was taking the p*ss sitting there in the first place, it's fair enough if cabs (not in crt) are flagged down even if crt are ranked there but to park up at the hotel is taking the p*ss

You behaved properly JW.

The street car has just as much right to stop there as anyone else.

It is NOT a rank, but if you are going to use it as such then normal manners, like passing the fare to the street car should apply.

Niether crt or the balmoral own the street outside, it is a public road and we all pay for a licence to operate there.

If the street car had picked up IN THE LOBBY of the hotel, then that would have been cheeky.

The fact is -

Central cars have no more right to sit outside the balmoral than anyone else.

Central cars have no more right to fares that walk out of the balmoral than anyone else.

The fact that the hotel uses central for radio work in niether here nor there.

It's not a chip on the shoulder thing.I just wouldn't waste any time trying to reason with such a fool that puts his own self interests first before the public.

You are right molehill,

The best thing to do is ignore an idiot like that,

Use the journey to explain to the passenger that he was a crt driver and many of them think that that is acceptable behaviour.

WRONG if you look at the wee red book you will find that taxis can't ply for hire whilst stationary, outwith a regulated rank.

In that case then NO ONE can wait...

and the same must apply outside lulu.. opal.. lava.. and the hundred other places taxis unofficially wait...

Outside a club it an unofficial rank 30 minutes before closing . That used to be the rule but with all the pampering to get the fish vans on the rule might have changed

I think we're all agreed that the guy at the front gets the work, whether you're driving up Willowbrae Road, parked outside Lulu or Ranked on Lothian Road, the guy at the front gets the work.

The only issue I can see is picking up within 50 rule where you're near an "unofficial" rank, in which case its down to the courtesy, or financial desperation, of the moving cab thats hailed by a customer that can't be bothered walking 20 yards to a parked one.
